It takes a village to raise a 21st-century graduate.

The 21st century’s reliance on technology is accelerating. Artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, and other emerging technologies are transforming the way we live—and the way we work.

But are we keeping up with this acceleration?

Are our nation’s schools supporting our students with the foundational science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) knowledge and skills needed to meet these new times? The answer is no. But we are here to change that.

In this edition of the STEM Century series, members of The National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) share their personal perspectives and guidance on how to ensure that all students, especially the underserved and underrepresented, receive comprehensive STEM education early, often, and everywhere.

This book is a must-read for educators, community leaders, business people, and parents committed to preparing our nation’s students to thrive for generations to come.

PROVEN LEADERSHIP

Dr. Blair's work in each school district has been through a thorough, inquiry-based planning model he coined, “System of Improvement: System, Process and People Success equals Student Success. Adapting and annually updating this model to each school for which I have served has proven beneficial and district and school effectiveness and academic improvement are inevitable.

The System Success is the design of a Student Learning Improvement Strategy which focuses on:

  • Active student learning in the instructional core;

  • Collaborative work culture that values adult practice and reflection and active student engagement; and

  • Coherent theory of action, active learning professional development plans, and a system-wide implementation strategy.

The Process Success is the use of educational research, alignment with strategic education partnerships, and implementation of principal support structures which focus on:

  • System-wide non-negotiables;

  • Strategic plan and school-improvement plan priorities; and

  • System and school performance goals.

The People Success of the use of a central-support team partnership intended to provide each school:

  • Targeted, customized leadership, instructional, and operational support.

The Student Success is the attainment of annual learning, behavioral, and experiential outcomes focused on individual and collective student outcomes in:

  • Reading

  • Mathematics

  • Attendance

  • Behavior

  • College and Career Readiness

  • Real-World Experiences
